You need to make sure you have the correct dyes for the material you are dyeing. I only dye wool fabric, yarn and nylon hosiery. To dye these materials I use acid dyes they are for dyeing wool nylon and silk and will not dye synthetic or cotton fabric.
Acid dyes give a good colour and need either citric acid or vinegar to add to the dye bath this helps to get the dye into the material the water will clear as the dye soaks into the wool.
Wool blankets come in a mulitude of flat boring colours so rip them up into managable sizes and throw them into a dye pan soaking in water before hand with a couple of drops of washing up liquid added. Don't be fooled by all blankets being wool some of them have a cotton thread through and that cotton will not dye. Have fun if you want to try your hand at dyeing come for a workhop or dye kits are available with instructions, dyes and dye spoons http://www.ragrugsuk.co.uk/

The Rugmaker

If you have any information or photographs for The Rugmaker magazine please email to me by February 1st. Leave 5 threads for thick material or 4 for thinner material and make a hole and prod the other end through. Go back into the last hole and prod the next peice when you have finished your rug turn it over and to admire your work!

This was the first proddy picture mat I did it was myself and my old horse made about 10 or 12 years ago. It was quite a learning curve! looking at it now I look a little broad across the shoulders and have a big hair day! the latter more noticable on the actual rug. How to use a Spring Hook If making a proddy picture mat thick wool fabric is perfect it gives your rug body and cutting your peices 2"long x 1/2" wide allows the peices to stand up firm keeping the picture in shape. For other designs you may prefer cutting the peices 3" long x 1/2" wide. If the material is thin as in cottons cut them 3"long x 1" wide
Gather 5 threads onto your hook (see above)

Squeeze handles to open and place material in the jaw release handles and pull material through .

Go back into the last hole you will have two pieces of material in one hole and continue as above.

COPYRIGHT

Copyright
You cannot copy a pattern and then make changes to call it your own -it isn't the little details that are copyrighted, it is the creativity that is copyrighted. Taking someone else's experience, training, thinking, effort and more effort and using it to make a shortcut as though you had that training, experience and time invested is not only a copyright violation, it is not ethical. There is no iffy line, there is a very solid line drawn with a big black marker - if someone else created it, it belongs to them. Period.... You can freely copy it seventy years after their death.

Also, there is no difference between personal use and and any other use. Any copying without permission for any use at all is a copyright violation.
Knowing that, and knowing how much time and effort goes into making a rug, it is absolutely foolish to take any chances.
An example is a rug that was made by a superb hooker, a rug that was so well designed and made that it was selected for Celebrations - but, the central motif was of something that seemed like it belonged to all of our childhoods, much like a bicycle or a little red wagon, but that particular item was a copyrighted logo. When the superb hooker learned from Celebrations that she'd have to have a statement of permission from the logo copyright owner, she immediately sent off a letter to the company - and they said NO. A wonderful big beautiful rug, and she was told she could not dispaly it anywhere.
You never know ahead of time what you might want to do with a rug in the future - it just isn't worth the gamble to denigrate your own ability by taking something that belongs to someone else.

If you don't hold the copyright, you don't have the right to copy
Phyllis Lindblade

To order or for more information contact

Cilla Cameron Rug Maker

The Rug Studio

18 Elmcroft

Oxton

Nottingham NG25 0SB

Tel 0775 277 2474

email cilla@jpcameron.fsnet.co.uk

http://www.ragrugsuk.co.uk/

http://www.reethrugretreat.com/

cheques payable to Cilla Cameron

credit & debit cards taken
